What is the Four Temperaments Test?
The four temperaments are one of the oldest ideas in the study of personality. Ancient Greek medicine, from Hippocrates to the Roman physician Galen, linked character to four bodily "humours" and named four types: Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholic and Phlegmatic. The humoral theory itself was abandoned long ago, but the four portraits proved remarkably durable.
In the twentieth century the psychologist Hans Eysenck showed that the classical types map neatly onto two measurable dimensions: extraversion–introversion (where your energy goes) and emotional stability (how strongly and quickly you react). This test uses that modern framing.
How the test works
- 28 questions, about 8 minutes, answered on a five-point agreement scale.
- 14 questions measure your energy: Extraverted (E) or Introverted (I).
- 14 questions measure your emotional tone: Steady (S) or Intense (N).
- Your two leanings combine into one of four temperaments: Sanguine (ES), Choleric (EN), Phlegmatic (IS) or Melancholic (IN).
What you get
A detailed portrait of your temperament with its typical strengths, challenges, behaviour in relationships and at work, the roles it often gravitates to, and practical growth tips. It is a useful mirror for self-reflection, team conversations and understanding why people around you react so differently.
An honest note
This is a self-reflection tool, not a clinical or diagnostic instrument. Most people are a blend of temperaments, and your answers can shift with mood and circumstances. Answer according to how you usually are, not how you would like to be.
